The English Language Center provides the community with an opportunity to get involved and to help change lives. Volunteers enhance students’ learning by helping them practice conversations and by working with teachers to provide on-on-one help. In the last fiscal year, 302 volunteers gave 4,261 hours of service! Our volunteers come from all walks of life: retired physicians, stay-at-home moms, college students, USU professors, former ELC students, retirees, etc. and collectively speak 30 different languages!
“…following an informative orientation, we worked out a schedule where many options were presented so that I was able to come at times that worked well for me. My students were from Ethiopia, Thailand, Mexico, Taiwan, and El Salvador. The staff created a warm, friendly, safe environment for the volunteers and students, and have also created a very impressive program. I plan to volunteer again!”

Once the application is received, the Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to arrange a time for New Volunteer Orientation. At that time we will take you on a tour, take your photo, do some training, etc.
Most volunteers serve about 2 hours per week, between the hours of 9:00am and 12:30pm for the morning classes, or between 6:00pm and 9:30pm for the night classes, Monday through Thursday. The volunteer chooses a day/time that is convenient for them and then comes regularly to the same class so that they can really get to know the students.
Volunteers serve as classroom aides, under the direction of an instructor, practicing conversation skills, correcting workbooks, leading small group activities, and modeling pronunciation. It is not necessary to speak a second language to be a great volunteer!
“It wasn’t so much a volunteer experience on my part as it was a thoroughly enjoyable time spent getting to know and converse with some interesting and lovely people. I’m sure I learned as much from them as they learned from me. I look forward to volunteering as the staff are friendly and helpful and the students amazing. How lucky I am.”
